What your result means

The maturity value is the balance in your PPF account at the end of the chosen tenure if the interest rate stays at the figure you entered. Total deposited is your own money; interest earned is what the account adds, and the donut shows how big that share becomes: over 15 years at 7.1% the interest is close to the amount you put in.

The year-wise balance chart and table show how slowly the account grows at first and how quickly later. Interest is credited once a year, but because it is credited on the full balance, every year’s interest is larger than the last.

How to use this PPF calculator

  1. Choose once a year (a lump sum at the start of the financial year) or every month.
  2. Enter the deposit amount. The scheme allows ₹500 to ₹1,50,000 per financial year, so monthly deposits are capped at ₹12,500.
  3. The interest rate is pre-filled with the notified rate for Q3 FY 2026-27 (7.1%). Change it if a later quarter’s rate has been announced.
  4. Pick the tenure: 15 years, or 20, 25 or 30 if you plan to extend in 5-year blocks.
  5. Choose whether you deposit by the 5th of the month (earns interest for that month) or after the 5th.

How PPF interest works, with a worked example

PPF interest follows paragraph 7 of the Public Provident Fund Scheme, 2019: for each calendar month, interest at the notified annual rate is allowed on the lowest balance between the close of the 5th day and the end of the month, and the total is credited at the end of the year. In practice:

Month interest = lowest balance (5th → month end) × rate ÷ 12
Year interest = sum of the 12 month figures, credited on 31 March

A deposit made on or before the 5th counts for that month; one made on the 6th or later counts from the next month. Because interest is credited only once a year, the account compounds annually.

Worked example (computed by this tool’s own function): ₹1,50,000 deposited by 5 April every year at 7.1% for 15 years.

  • Year 1: balance ₹1,50,000 for all 12 months → interest ₹10,650; balance ₹1,60,650
  • Year 2: deposit again → ₹3,10,650 earns ₹22,056; balance ₹3,32,706
  • Year 15: balance ₹40,68,208 on ₹22,50,000 deposited; interest ₹18,18,208

The same ₹1,50,000 a year deposited as ₹12,500 on the 5th of each month gives ₹39,44,600, and a lump sum deposited after 5 April each year gives ₹40,45,737, because the first month’s interest is lost.

Special cases and common mistakes

  • The rate changes every quarter. The Government notifies small-savings rates before each quarter. A projection over 15 years at today’s rate is an illustration, not a promise; past rates have been both higher and lower.
  • Deposit after the 5th. A deposit on the 6th earns nothing for that month. For a yearly lump sum, depositing on 1–5 April rather than later in the year can add a few thousand rupees a year.
  • Maturity date is not exactly 15 years from opening. It is 15 years from the end of the financial year of opening, so an account opened in August 2026 matures on 1 April 2042. The calculator counts 15 deposit years; a 16th deposit in the final partial year is possible under the Scheme.
  • Over-deposit. Amounts above ₹1,50,000 in a year are refunded without interest and do not qualify for deduction.
  • Minor’s account. The ₹1,50,000 ceiling is shared between your own account and any account you operate for a minor.
  • Missed years. If less than ₹500 is deposited in a year, the account is discontinued and must be revived with a fee of ₹50 per year plus the arrears (paragraph 6).
  • Extension without deposits. After maturity you can keep the account with no further deposits and it still earns interest; the calculator’s 20–30 year options assume you continue depositing.

Frequently asked questions

What is the current PPF interest rate?

7.1% per annum for the quarter 1 October to 31 December 2026 (Q3 FY 2026-27), as notified by the Department of Economic Affairs in its Office Memorandum of 30 September 2026, which kept rates unchanged from the previous quarter. The rate is reviewed every quarter, so you can change it in the calculator.

How is PPF interest calculated?

Interest is calculated each month on the lowest balance in the account between the close of the 5th day and the end of the month, at one-twelfth of the annual rate, and is credited to the account at the end of the financial year (paragraph 7 of the PPF Scheme, 2019). So deposits made by the 5th earn interest for that month; deposits after the 5th earn from the next month.

What is the minimum and maximum deposit?

At least ₹500 and at most ₹1,50,000 in a financial year, in multiples of ₹50, in one lump sum or in instalments (paragraphs 4 and 5 of the PPF Scheme, 2019). The ₹1,50,000 ceiling includes deposits in a minor's account you operate.

When does a PPF account mature?

On the expiry of 15 years from the end of the financial year in which the account was opened (paragraph 11). After that you can extend it in blocks of 5 years, with or without fresh deposits (paragraphs 11 and 12), which is why the calculator offers 15, 20, 25 and 30 years.

Is it better to deposit ₹1,50,000 in April or ₹12,500 every month?

A single deposit by 5 April earns interest for all 12 months of the year, so it gives a higher maturity than the same total spread over 12 months. The difference each year is roughly half a year's interest on the amount; use the yearly and monthly options to see it.

Is PPF interest tax-free?

PPF is in the exempt-exempt-exempt category: deposits qualify for deduction under section 80C (old regime), and the interest and the maturity amount are exempt from income tax under the rules in force. This calculator shows the full maturity without any tax.

Can I withdraw before 15 years?

Partial withdrawals are allowed from the seventh financial year, and loans from the third to the sixth year, within limits set in the Scheme (paragraphs 8 and 10). Premature closure is allowed only in specified situations such as serious illness or higher education, with a reduced interest rate (paragraph 13).
