What your result means
The big numbers give the gap as complete years, months and days, the way a contract, lease or HR letter would describe it. Below them the same gap is shown as a single count: total days, weeks and remaining days, total months and hours, plus how many of those days were weekdays (Monday to Friday) and weekend days.
By default the end date is not counted, so Monday to Tuesday is 1 day. Tick Include the end date when both ends should count, which is how leave, hotel stays and most notice periods are measured.
How to use this date difference calculator
- Enter the from date and the to date. Example dates are shown until you type your own.
- Tick Include the end date as a full day if the last day should be counted.
- Read the result instantly. If the first date is later than the second, the tool swaps them for you.
- Use Copy to paste the result into a message, or Share to send a link with both dates filled in.
How the calculation works, with a worked example
The calculator steps from the first date in whole calendar units: it adds as many years as fit, then as many months, and the leftover is days. When a month is shorter than the starting day (31 January plus one month), the step lands on the last day of that month. Total days are the exact number of midnights crossed, which automatically accounts for leap years.
Worked example (computed by this tool’s own function): 1 January 2026 to 31 October 2026.
- Years: 0 (1 January 2027 would be past the end date)
- Months: 1 January → 1 October 2026 = 9 months
- Days: 1 October → 31 October = 30 days
- Total: 303 days = 43 weeks and 2 days, 217 weekdays and 86 weekend days
With Include the end date ticked, 1 to 31 October 2026 counts 31 days (1 month).

Special cases and common mistakes
- Inclusive vs exclusive counting. “Days between” normally excludes the end date; “days of stay” or “days of leave” includes it. Pick the box setting that matches the rule you are following; the two answers differ by exactly one day.
- Month lengths. Adding “one month” to 31 January gives 28 or 29 February, not 3 March. The years-months-days figure follows this convention, which is also how banks count tenure.
- Weekdays are not working days. Public and bank holidays are not removed. For a precise working-day count, subtract the holidays that apply to you.
- Date format. India writes 31-10-2026 (day first); the date picker avoids confusion, but if you type, check that month and day are not swapped.
- Time of day is ignored. The result is in whole calendar days. A span from 11 pm to 1 am the next day is still 1 day.
- Very long spans. Centuries are fine; the Gregorian rules (century years are leap only if divisible by 400) are applied.
Frequently asked questions
How are the days between two dates counted?
The calculator counts the number of midnights between the two dates, so 1 January to 2 January is 1 day. Tick 'Include the end date' if both the first and last day should count, as in leave applications or hotel stays: 1 to 31 October then gives 31 days.
Why does the years-months-days result not match total days ÷ 30?
Months have 28 to 31 days, so the calculator steps through real calendar months instead of dividing by an average. From 1 January to 31 October 2026 it reports 9 months and 30 days (303 days), not 10.1 months.
Does it handle leap years?
Yes. 29 February is counted in leap years, which is why two years from 15 August 2023 is 731 days rather than 730.
What counts as a weekday?
Monday to Friday. Weekend days are Saturdays and Sundays. Public holidays are not excluded because they differ by state and employer.
Can I enter the later date first?
Yes. If the first date is after the second, the calculator swaps them and tells you, so the result is always a positive span.
How do I count days for an insurance claim, notice period or visa stay?
Enter the start and end dates and tick 'Include the end date' if the rules count both days (most stay and notice-period rules do). When in doubt, check the wording of the policy or contract.
