Year conversion only. The Samvat year changes on Chaitra Shukla Pratipada (March/April), so the difference is 56 in the early months and 57 after. For a specific date, consult a panchang.
What your result means
The large number is the Vikram Samvat year for the Gregorian year and month you entered. When the month is January or February, or May to December, the answer is certain. When it is March or April, the tool shows the likely value with the alternative, because the Samvat year changes on Chaitra Shukla Pratipada, a lunar date that falls somewhere in those two months.
The small cards show both values for the year as a whole (before and after the new year) and the Shaka Samvat (India’s national calendar) for reference. In the reverse direction, the tool shows the two Gregorian years that a Samvat year spans.
How to use this converter
- Choose AD → Vikram Samvat or Vikram Samvat → AD.
- Enter the year. For AD → VS, also pick the month if you know it; it removes the ambiguity for most of the year.
- Read the result. For March–April dates, or when you need the exact tithi, check a panchang for that year’s Chaitra Shukla Pratipada.
How the conversion works, with a worked example
From Chaitra Shukla Pratipada to 31 December: VS = AD + 57
From 1 January to the day before it: VS = AD + 56
Reverse: a Samvat year starts in AD = VS − 57 and ends in AD = VS − 56
Worked example (computed by this tool’s own function):
- November 2026 → Vikram Samvat 2083 (certain)
- January 2026 → Vikram Samvat 2082 (certain)
- March 2026 → 2082 or 2083, depending on whether the date is before or after Chaitra Shukla Pratipada that year
- Vikram Samvat 2083 → runs from 2026 (Chaitra) to 2027 (Phalguna)

Special cases and common mistakes
- Adding 57 to a January date. A birth on 10 January 2000 is in Vikram Samvat 2056, not 2057, because the Hindu new year had not yet begun.
- March and April. Chaitra Shukla Pratipada has fallen anywhere from mid-March to mid-April in recent decades. For those dates only a panchang can tell you which Samvat year applies.
- Regional variants. Gujarat’s Vikram Samvat begins on Kartik Shukla Pratipada (the day after Diwali), so its year number changes in October–November. Nepal’s Bikram Sambat begins in Baisakh (mid-April) and uses a solar reckoning. This tool follows the North Indian Chaitra-starting convention.
- Era origin. The Vikram era is counted from 57 BC; the constant offsets above already account for the missing year zero.
- Samvat month names. The Samvat year runs Chaitra, Vaishakha, Jyeshtha, Ashadha, Shravana, Bhadrapada, Ashwina, Kartika, Margashirsha, Pausha, Magha, Phalguna; months do not line up with Gregorian months, which is another reason day-level conversion needs a panchang.
- Certificates and forms. Government forms in India use the Gregorian (and sometimes Shaka) date; use this tool for festivals, horoscopes and traditional records, not for official date fields.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Vikram Samvat year for 2026?
Vikram Samvat 2083 from Chaitra Shukla Pratipada (March/April 2026) to the end of the year, and 2082 for January to that day. The difference is 57 after the Hindu new year and 56 before it.
Why is the difference sometimes 56 and sometimes 57?
The Vikram Samvat year begins on Chaitra Shukla Pratipada, which falls in March or April of the Gregorian calendar. From that day to 31 December, VS = AD + 57; from 1 January to the day before it, VS = AD + 56.
How do I convert Vikram Samvat to AD?
Subtract 57 to get the Gregorian year in which the Samvat year begins, and 56 for the year in which it ends. VS 2083 runs from AD 2026 (Chaitra) to AD 2027 (Phalguna).
Can this tool convert an exact date?
No. The Samvat new year follows the lunar calendar, so the exact day of Chaitra Shukla Pratipada changes every year. For a date in March or April, or for tithi-level conversion, consult a panchang.
What is Shaka Samvat and how is it different?
Shaka Samvat is India's official national calendar; its year is AD − 78 (after its new year around 22 March) or AD − 79 before it. The tool shows it for reference beside the Vikram Samvat value.
Which regions use Vikram Samvat?
It is widely used in North and West India and in Nepal, mainly for festivals, horoscopes and traditional dates. Gujarat follows a Kartik-starting variant, so its year number changes after Diwali; this tool follows the Chaitra-starting convention.
